Surrender

I used to think surrender was like surfing. Paddle out to the deep, wait for the wave to grow, catch it and follow the flow of God wherever He leads.  To me surrender was always an adventure and I loved the thrill of throwing caution to the wind, as I chose to let Jesus take me wherever He wanted to.

But throughout this year my eyes have been opened to another side of surrender that I previously missed.

What does surrender look like when the wave that comes your way is beyond your ability to control?

We can grab our surfboard like usual, but suddenly we’re flipped upside down and we find ourselves beneath the water, board strapped to our ankle and gasping for air.

In this place of surrender we are forced to submit to the current, as we are taken to places that we otherwise wouldn’t have gone. This place of surrender is one filled with questions, concerns and doubts as we are challenged beyond what we can comprehend.

It’s an unnerving place.

But it’s from this place of absolute surrender that we can truly learn what it means to put our trust in God. It’s only from this place of “unknowns” that we can make the choice to fall to our knees and say, “You are God and I am not.”

Battling against an unstoppable wave is impossible, but as we trust in His character and humble ourselves to the wave, He leads into a place of blessing. It’s only from that weak place of surrender that we allow the strength and force of God to push us into the next chapter of the unfolding story of our lives.

I have learned to kiss the wave that throws me against the Rock Of Ages.
